Definition
Metacognition is the awareness of and control over your own learning: knowing what you know, knowing what you do not know, and planning accordingly.
Why it matters
Without metacognition, learners persist with strategies that feel productive but actually fail to produce durable learning.
Scientific basis
Metacognition research shows that accurate self-monitoring is one of the strongest predictors of academic and professional success.
How to apply it
- Keep a learning journal: what did you do, what worked, what did not.
- Before each study session, set one observable goal and a plan to test yourself.
- After each session, ask what you still cannot do that you will need next time.
Common mistakes
- Treating confidence as a proxy for competence.
- Avoiding self-tests because they surface uncomfortable gaps.
- Planning in detail but never reviewing what actually happened.
Examples
- A student who logs practice-test scores and uses them to focus review on weak areas.
- A programmer who keeps a checklist of common bugs and revisits it after each session.
