Two-Minute Start

Atomic HabitsHabit Beginners · Habit Start · Single SessionEasy

for the ones who keep quitting on day three

Goal

Make the first week of any new study habit a 2-minute action you cannot fail.

Source principle

Scale any new habit down to under two minutes so showing up becomes impossible to skip. : from Atomic Habits by James Clear.

The plan

  1. 🎯
    0:00-0:02
Pick the one study habit you keep failing to start.
  2. ✂️
    0:02-0:05
Shrink it: 'open notes app, read one paragraph'.
  3. 🪢
    0:05-0:08
Anchor it: 'After morning coffee, I will read one paragraph'.
  4. ⏲️
    0:08-0:10
Set a 2-min timer on the desk, not the phone.
  5. 📖
    0:10-0:12
Run it once. Stop at 2 min even if you want more.
  6. 📓
    0:12-0:14
Log it: 'showed up'. That's the win.
  7. 🔁
    0:14-0:16
Reset the timer for tomorrow's same cue.
  8. 🗒️
    0:16-0:20
Stick the cue card where you'll see it tomorrow.

Reward

Check the box and say "I showed up" out loud
