✍️Elaboration Journal

Make It StickAdult Learners · Evening · Evening BlockEasy

for the lifelong learners closing the day with meaning

Goal

Restate today's concepts in your own words and connect each to something you already know.

Source principle

Elaboration: putting ideas into your own words and linking them to existing knowledge builds retrievable, durable schemas. : from Make It Stick by Brown, Roediger & McDaniel.

The plan

  1. 📖
    7:00-7:05 PM
Open today's study notes. Scan for 2 concepts worth keeping.
  2. 🏷️
    7:05-7:15 PM
Pick exactly 2 concepts. Write each name at the top of a fresh page.
  3. 🪶
    7:15-7:35 PM
Concept 1: write in plain language, as if explaining to a curious friend.
  4. 💭
    7:35-7:55 PM
Concept 2: same treatment. Plain words, no jargon dumps.
  5. 🔗
    7:55-8:10 PM
Attach one personal example or prior concept to each idea. The link is the learning.
  6. 🚩
    8:10-8:20 PM
Mark any link that feels forced. Those are tomorrow's revisits.
  7. 📌
    8:20-8:25 PM
Pick ONE concept to revisit tomorrow. Write its name on tomorrow's plan.
  8. 🌙
    8:25-8:30 PM
Close the journal. Sleep consolidates what you wrote.
