for the ones who escape confusion too early
Goal
Sit with one hard problem for a bounded block instead of bailing to the answer key.
Source principle
Productive difficulty: the friction of struggling to recall or solve is exactly what builds durable learning; escaping it too early steals the gain. : from Make It Stick by Brown, Roediger & McDaniel.
The plan
- ๐ฏ0:00-0:05Pick one problem you'd normally skip. The one that 'isn't worth the time'.
- ๐งน0:05-0:10Clear the desk. NO answer key, no Google, no friend. Just you and the problem.
- โฒ๏ธ0:10-0:15Set a 25-min timer. Write the problem at the top of a fresh page.
- โ๏ธ0:15-0:40Attempt 1: work the problem for 25 min. Note every wrong turn.
- ๐0:40-0:45Note why each attempt failed. What did it teach you about the problem?
- ๐ถ0:45-0:505-min walk. Don't check the answer. Let the problem breathe.
- ๐0:50-1:15Attempt 2: another 25-min push. Apply what the failures taught you.
- โ
1:15-1:25ONLY NOW check the key. Compare your reasoning to the official path.
- ๐1:25-1:30Write one line: 'The gap between my path and the key was ___.' That's the lesson.
